Sumant Sinha is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of ReNew—India’s leading decarbonization solutions
company and the first Indian renewable energy company to list on NASDAQ (NASDAQ: RNW). Sumant returned
to India in 2002 after a decade-long career in investment banking in the US and the UK, to join the
Aditya Birla Group as the finance head. Sumant’s first brush with running a clean energy company came
in 2008, when he joined Suzlon as its Chief Operating Officer. In 2010, Sumant founded his own
renewable energy company, ReNew, with a vision to transform the way energy is produced and consumed.
Under his leadership, ReNew has grown exponentially and is today an integral part of the larger global
clean energy ecosystem. Apart from renewable energy, ReNew provides clean solutions in value-added
areas as green hydrogen, intelligent (data-driven) solutions, storage, solar panels and modules and
carbon markets.
Sumant is a passionate advocate for climate action and sustainable
development. He served as the President of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India
(ASSOCHAM) during 2022-23. He co-chairs the US—India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF). He is a
member of the Board of the Global Wind Energy Council and chairs the newly established Global Advisory
Board of GWEC. Sumantis also a board member at the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), an independent
non-profit that transforms global energy systems through market-driven solutions. He is also the
co-chair of the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders India, an initiative of the World Economic Forum. He
is a founding member of the First Movers Coalition, a global initiative to decarbonize ‘hard to abate’
industrial sectors.
As an expert on climate change, clean energy, economic policy and
entrepreneurship, Sumant speaks extensively on global platforms, is a sought-after columnist and
commentator, and has authored more than a hundred articles in leading global and Indian publications.
For his work, Sumant has been recognized by international organizations, including the UN Global
Compact SDG Pioneer in 2021 and by S&P Global Platts as the ‘Chief Trailblazer of the Year 2021’. In
2022, he was the inaugural recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award of Columbia University’s School
of International and Public Affairs for his contribution to climate action and the clean energy
transition. He is also the recipient of the 2019 Distinguished Alumnus Award of IIM Calcutta; the 2018
Economic Times ‘Entrepreneur of the Year Award’ and Distinguished Alumnus Award of IIT Delhi.
Sumant holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from IIT Delhi, India,
a post-graduate diploma in business management from IIM Calcutta, India, and a master’s degree in
international affairs from Columbia University, US. He is also a CFA charterholder.
Despite a busy schedule to run India’s leading renewable energy
company, Sumant continues to pursue his passion for writing.
